I used to really enjoy drawing when I was in elementary school, and I would doodle all over my worksheets and homework. I grew up watching my sibling draw as a creative outlet and I asked my parents for a sketchbook. As little sibling habits go, I was not as good and decided that crafting was more my style. If I had tried a little harder, I think I might have been a more confident artist, especially with still life. This week was a good way for me to get out of my comfort zone and revisit my sketchpad for its intended purpose: expressing my perspective without words.

In my high school French class, we read Le Petit Prince, by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, a children’s novella that deals with growing up and the processes of grief. The narrator, in the first chapter, explains how he wanted to be a great artist when he was a young child, drawing the ideas and thoughts he kept in his mind. The adults never understood his drawings, never going underneath the surface for the intention of the piece, and they encouraged him to do something else. I felt an empathy for the narrator, as I myself gone through a similar experience, except it was me who discouraged myself from pursuing art more thoroughly. This novella is a critical piece of French literature and all literature for that matter, as it is a well known text for all ages.

This week’s project started out as this daunting wall that I needed to swing over, but by the time I gave myself the patience to actually start, I had finished the drawings within a single afternoon. Some are simple and some are a little more detail oriented. Thank for you for the assignment this week, I’ve found yet another outlet that I feel a little more confident in.
