Wk 8 — Art Activity — Student Choice, Part 1

My junior year, I got a job to raise money for a trip to France my teacher would organize every other year. This trip still means a lot to me and it inspired me to pursue a career in French teaching. But there is one specific moment on my trip that deeply resonated with me…

On the third day of our trip, our tour group did an entire week’s worth of activities in a single day, and I was so drained of energy from running around all day and not being able to enjoy the sights we saw. In the middle of the day, a couple of us were supposed to see this show we bought tickets for so we were only allowed to spend about 45 minutes in the world famous Louvre Museum. My friends wanted to see E V E R Y T H I N G and I could barely catch my breath, so to calm down, I walked with my mom slowly throughout the museum, enjoying whatever paintings we saw, regardless of if they were incredibly famous or not. When our little group met up to go to the show, the lobby of the museum was completely filled with people and the noise as unbearable. I couldn’t breath again and I slunk back into a wall and started crying from over stimulus. Our French tour guide came up to me, asking me what the matter was, and I stumbled over my words through my harsh breaths. I’m explaining that I don’t know why I feel like this, it feels like there’s a brick on my chest and I can’t breath. I told him, “I’m a social butterfly, I don’t know why I’m feeling so overwhelmed!” What he says to me then, in his awkward English, I will never forget.

“Butterflies are social, yes I agree, but I’d like to remind you that they need space to fly.”

I never really understood the importance of what he said until I got to my senior year and I don’t go a day without thinking of what he said to me.

So for this and next week’s project, I thought I’d make a crafty butterfly mobile for my room. I plan on using construction paper and newspaper for details. I want to use only paper and glue, without pencil or pen. I’ll use scissors and my exacto knife to cut out details. I think it may take a few tries to get to look the way I want, but if they end up being too small or goofy looking, I’ll have multiple to hang up from my ceiling.

Here’s some of my inspiration:

one line butterfly (I wish I could draw like this!)
